内容提要:Recent research from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) on the CFD of breaking waves will be presented. Analysis of standard two-equation turbulence closure models will be presented, formally proving that they are unconditionally unstable in the potential flow regions beneath surface waves. This explains the marked wide-spread over-prediction of turbulence levels experienced in most previous CFD simulations of wave breaking. A simple and elegant method for their formal stabilization will be presented, requiring minimal changes to existing codes (say 3-4 lines of code), thus solving this problem. Model applications demonstrating improved performance of new stabilized turbulence models will include: (1) simple wave trains, (2) small scale spilling and plunging regular waves, (3) full scale plunging of bichromatic wave groups (both flow and sediment transport and morphology), and (4) breaking of dispersive short waves on long tsunami fronts. In the latter case, the importance (or lack thereof) of such short waves in the overall run-up of tsunamis will be discussed.
