报告简介:
Biocementation is a recently developed technique for soil stabilization in geotechnical engineering applications, as it employs microbiological activity that improves the engineering properties of soils through microbial induced calcite precipitation (MICP). This is also commonly known as “biogrout”. This technique utilizes the metabolic pathways of bacteria to form calcite (CaCO3) that binds the soil particles together, leading to increased soil strength and stiffness. Biogrout is environmentally-friendly and has the potential to be a better alternate to chemically-based grouting materials such as lime or cement. In this talk, some recent research studies including laboratory investigation on the soil improvement will be discussed. In addition, applications of MICP in other various civil engineering applications will be mentioned, such as dust and wind erosion control, bio-clogging for fractured rock permeability reduction, water-proof protective layer, etc.. The challenges that lay ahead for future research prior to real practical applications of this promising technique will also be reviewed.
