Physical Oceanography is a key discipline and one of the disciplines with characteristics, and also the only science major with marine features in Hohai University.
The main research orientations are offshore ocean waves and its applications, disastrous marine processes and estuarine, offshore circulation and environment. Other research orientations are engineering oceanography, marine monitoring principles and technology and so on.
This discipline has a high quality, highly educated, young faculty team (with an average age of 39) among whom there are 7 professors (all are doctoral supervisors), 4 associate professors, 8 lecturers, and 10 members having received a Ph.D. degree.
There are Institute of Physical Oceanography, Institute of Storm Surges, Laboratory of Environmental Oceanography, Experiment Center of Estuaries and Coasts, Laboratory of Annular Flume. The total area of these laboratories is about 6500 m2. Currently, more than 100 scientific research projects are undertaken, among which there are 2 National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), 1 National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), 4 projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, 8 projects supported by provincial and ministrial key foundation, 6 international cooperation projects, more than 70 provincial and municipal local construction and service projects. The total research funding amounts to more than 25 million during the "Tenth Five-Year Plan". More than 40 scientific papers and reports are published every year. 5 Academic Monographs have been published. Totally more than 500 undergraduate students and more than 20 graduate students have been enrolled.
Recently, three research orientations (offshore wave and its applications, disastrous marine processes, estuarine and offshore circulation and environment) with distinctive professional features have been gradually formed. The short-term goal of Physical Oceanography discipline construction is to become an elaborate discipline.
