Discipline: Science (07)   First-level discipline: Marine Science (0707)

Physical Oceanography is subordinate to the first-level discipline Marine Science, covering the areas of Marine Science, Marine Technology, Marine Environment Protection, Marine Climate, Marine Military and Marine Engineering. The main research interests are ocean currents, ocean waves, marine circulation and sediment transport, theory and numerical forecast of disastrous ocean process, environmental ocean dynamic process, climate and sea level change.

The research orientations are mainly offshore dynamic process and mechanism, characterized by ocean currents, global climate and sea level change. The research projects include circulation, environment and climate change etc., concentrating on subject intersection and integration and solving significant science and technology problems. The subject won 1 second prize of National Awards for Science and Technology, 1 first and 1 second prize of Awards for Science and Technology from Ministry of Education. In recent 5 years, we have undertaken more than 20 basic research and international cooperation projects, including National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), National Key Technology Support Program and projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China.

The subject is the provincial key subject of Jiangsu Province, is an authorized doctoral degree subject. Currently there are 5 doctoral supervisors and 7 professors. 11 faculty members received their Ph.D. Degree. More than 200 scientific papers have been published in recent years.
