Coastal Resources and Environment is a self-founded second-level discipline under the first-level discipline of Hydraulic Engineering. The enrollment of Ph.D. students started in 2002.

      Hohai University has a long history of cultivating talents for coastal and ocean engineering. Significant achievements have been achieved in the researches on estuarine and coastal hydrodynamics and basic laws of sediment transport, coastal storm surge disaster mechanism, development and utilization of coastal and ocean resources. 3 first prize of National Awards for Science and Technology (NAST), 1 second prize of NAST, 2 third prize of NAST, and about 50 ministerial and provincial prizes have been won for scientific and technological achievements. "Integrated coastal zone development and protection" was a key construction project of "211 project" of Hohai University during the "Ninth Five-Year Plan". "Integrated development and protection of coastal and offshore areas" is also in the list of key construction projects of "211 project" during the "Tenth Five-Year Plan".

      This discipline aims at specialized researches on the engineering and management of the coastal resources and environment based on the convergence and penetration with Harbour, Coastal and Offshore Engineering (key discipline of Jiangsu Province), Physical Oceanography and Science of Environment and Natural Resources Protection Law. We devote to serve the environment protection, resources development and management fields concerning hydraulic engineering, coastal ocean engineering and ecological engineering etc.

      There are now 13 professors, 9 associate professors, among whom there are 6 doctoral supervisors, and 11 members having received a Ph.D. degree. In recent five years, the total funding has been more than 20 million Yuan. 9 Academic Monographs and textbook have been published, about 600 scientific papers have been published including 20 SCI, EI and ISTP papers.

      High-level talents in the coastal resources and environment field have been cultivated. They are well-qualified for the jobs in higher education, scientific research or technology development with a wealth of knowledge in coastal-related resources, environment, ecology, engineering, economy, management and law.

      The major research interests are as follows:
      (1) Coastal ocean environmental dynamics and disasters.
      (2) Coastal ocean Environmental Monitoring and Information Technology.
      (3) Exploitation, management and sustainable development of coastal resources.
      (4) Coastal structures and natural environment.
      (5) Utilization and protection of estuarine and coastal wetlands.
